a week later...
Dec. 12th, 2018 10:40 pm So without putting in any real effort to verify, i think its been about a week since I made this account, and stared my adventure in figuring out what the hell this all is exactly, and I have some thoughts.
- I feel like ive been thrown back to the '98-'03 era of my internet experience, and while it was a little jarring at first, its quickly becoming comfortable again.
-If I go to my reading page, and think of it as "new tumblr" I'm going to be dissapointed, because it's not tumblr, and it shouldn't have to be. We are taking a step back to an arguably simpler time with more direct communication, and we are (hopefully learning from the past) recreating how to exist as a fandom. Again. We have to take care of it, and shape the fandom experience that we want for ourselves.
-the lack of a like button really isn't that bad, and I think I will eventually stop instinctively to click on a heart icon. It encourages me to interact more directly with the creator, even if it's a <3 or :), which makes it mean more than a casual tap to give kudos and then scrolling on. It's something I would like to be able to get used to.
-It's more like a forum with a list of threads full of conversations than it is like tumblr. Before joining fandom officially, (instead of just lurking through several fandoms and reading lots of fics like I did in the 7 years before) I was part of a group on a cycling forum. I was living in Chicago at the time and my bike was my main transportation. We called ourselves the loungers, and were mostly the casual riders and bike commuters who almost never talked about bicycles, but rapidly filled threads with comments about literally anything else. Commenting was the only way we had to get to know eachother, so we commented a lot. and a lot of what we commented were memes and shitposts. (We also had occasional meetups to do a little bit of riding together before drinking beer.)
-I'm also on pillowfort, have been for almost a week there, and im holding neutral on it. I havn't been able to use it enough to have any opinion other than dissapointment, and annoyance with all the lagging, or more commonly nothing happening, that has happened whenever I have tried. Keeping my account as a place holder, and may give it another shot later on if it seems to improve and take off.
-The people I have connected with here so far, and who have been putting so much effort into making this place work, are amazing. We may still be small, but the Stucky/Marvel comminity is doing pretty good so far, and growing steadily. I think we have enough key players for this to be a success, and Im excited to be a part of it.
- The HTML coding that I learned in college ('02-'06) is still relevant here. The graphic and web design courses I took taught me things that are actually still useful. Its a nice change after the usual reality check on my college education. In most of the world, everything I learned is absolete and no longer relevant, and I would have to start over to be able to work in the web design field.
TL;dr- DW is totally growing on me, and I think with time and nurturing, we could make this place pretty awesome for fandom. I'm glad to be here with so many awesome people.
I love everyone in this bar!
(especially the bartender at my work who made me some extra strong margaritas after my shift earlier)
